In red, a golden diagonal bar, topped with a striding black bear with red claws, tongue and penis.

The oldest description of the Bernese Coat of Arms is provided by the so-called Guglerlied from around 1375:

„Berner waffen ist so snell
mit drin gevarwten stricken;
der ein ist rot, der mittel gel,
darinn stat unverblichen
ein ber gar swarz gemalet wol,
rot sind ihn die klauwen;
er ist swerzer denn ein kol,
pris er bejagen sol.“

"The Bernese arms is bold,
with painted stripes within;
one is red, the middle yellow,
upon it stands, unfaded,
a bear, painted deep black,
its claws are red.
It is blacker than coal,
honor it shall earn.”
