The Carinthian coat of arms was created in the 13th century as a personal symbol of power of the Duke's son Ulrich III in the entourage of King Ottokar II of Bohemia and combined support for the Bohemian king (lion) with the claim to the Babenberg inheritance of Austria (shield). Under the Habsburgs, it was supplemented by helmet and crest (buffalo horns with attached leaves). In contrast to the other Austrian countries, the helmet, crest and mantling have remained part of the state coat of arms alongside the shield to this day.
